Why Reflexology & How it can help you
Background/Theory
Reflexology has been used for thousands of years in China and is widely accepted as part of self-care health process.
Western Reflexology started to be defined by Dr. William Fitzgerald an ear, nose & throat (ENT) surgeon in the early 1900s. Dr. Fitzgerald’s work was then taken forward by his colleague Eunice Ingham.
“If you’re feeling out of Kilter
Don’t know why or what about
Let your feet reveal the answer
Find the sore spot, rub it out”
Eunice Ingham – Stories the feet can tell through reflexology 1938
The theory of foot reflexology is that there is three distinct zones defined by the bone structure under the foot, shoulder and pelvic line.
Also 10 vertical lines which further divide the foot and these lines define where the reflexology points are located.
There is the same bone structure on the hand so the same points can be transferred to the hand. Hand reflexology is often used if there is a problem treating the feet but it is also a standalone treatment.
Hand reflexology can be very useful as an addition to your regular foot reflexology session (I often give hand reflexology self-care homework between sessions).
Overview
Reflexology is a non-invasive complementary treatment that can be effective in promoting relaxation and well-being. Reflexology involves applying gentle pressure to specific points on your feet & lower legs or hands & forearms with fingers and thumb tips. These specific points correspond with different areas of the body and reflexologists work these points and areas.
Reflexology is a very easy therapy to accept; the most clothing that will have to be removed for a foot treatment to take place will be your socks and shoes - and your trouser legs rolled up!
The possible benefits of reflexology include:
- Deep relaxation
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Improved sleep
- Lifting of mood and sense of well-being
- Easing of digestive disorders
- Balancing body, mind and soul
- Easing of pain
- Improvement in menstrual and menopausal issues
- Cleansing the body of toxins
- Improving circulation
- Dealing with the after effects of Covid-19
- You may also find that other aspects improve too; however, this happens on an individual basis
Reflexology treatments can be adapted to help support you with a specific condition, such as dealing with the effects of Covid-19, stress, improve sleep, relieve aches & pains or support the body through the Menopause and many more.
My aim is to help your body and mind to relax, and free up the energy channels so that you leave feeling rejuvenated and more energetic than when you arrived.

What happens during a treatment?
In your first treatment, I will go through your medical and lifestyle details, and you will be asked to sign a consent form for treatment and a data privacy statement. This information will be kept confidential and secure.
Then you will be settled onto a couch and I will make observations of your feet before I start with a warm up foot massage, followed by a Reflexology routine and then I will finish with a cool down foot massage with cooling foot moisturiser.

I use my thumbs and forefingers to apply gentle massaging pressure to the feet, you may feel sensations in parts of your body throughout the treatment - this is a sign that your body is responding to the treatment.
Aftercare & self-help tips are given at the end of the session.

What happens at a treatment:
Facial reflexology is a gentle and non-invasive holistic therapy that focuses on stimulating reflex points on the face to promote relaxation, balance, and well-being.
During a facial reflexology treatment, gentle pressure is applied to specific points on the face, which correspond to different organs, systems, and glands throughout the body.
Consultation: The session usually begins with a consultation where I will discuss your health history, any specific concerns you may have, and your goals for the treatment. This helps me to tailor the session to your individual needs.
Relaxation: Then you will be settled onto a couch in a relaxing environment, with soothing music and dim lighting. I may offer additional relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, to help you unwind and prepare for the treatment.
Reflexology Techniques: Gentle pressure is applied to specific reflex points on your face. These points correspond to various parts of the body, including organs, glands, and systems such as the nervous and lymphatic systems.
Stimulation: The pressure applied to the reflex points helps to stimulate blood circulation, release tension, and promote the flow of energy throughout the body. This can help to restore balance and harmony to the body's natural rhythms.
Benefits: Facial reflexology may offer a range of benefits, including stress reduction, relaxation, improved circulation, enhanced lymphatic drainage, and relief from common ailments such as headaches, sinus congestion, and jaw tension. Some people also report improvements in skin tone and overall complexion.
Aftercare: After the treatment, I may provide you with some aftercare advice, such as staying hydrated, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and practicing self-care techniques at home to prolong the benefits of the treatment.
Facial reflexology is generally a gentle and soothing experience, and many people find it deeply relaxing and rejuvenating.
Please note: Always consult with your healthcare provider before trying any new holistic therapy, especially if you have any underlying health conditions.
Certain conditions may prevent the treatment from taking place, or you may require a letter of approval from your GP.
